One phone call closer

I received a call today from the company that I applied for the part time job with. I have the interview tomorrow. I calculated what I would make each week, and it's not much. But any amount gets me closer to Australia! I hope I get the job.

I was just reading about the 'fairy penguins' that trek home every evening. They look so cute!
Less than a year from now I'll be sunning myself on warm beaches, riding camels, hiking through Tasmania, scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef and exploring the Blue Mountains! AHH!

Wow!

I watched Discovery Atlas: Australia tonight. What doesn't Australia boast? The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing in the world, it's larger than Italy! Australia is larger than Europe but the population is thousands of times smaller. It's also known as the 'Lucky Country' because of the large deposits of natural minerals, including silver. I've got to be there!

From what I gathered, Australia seems to be a land of contrasts. The barren interior, the teeming ocean. The ancient aboriginals and the new settlers. The youngest country but one of the world's oldest indigenous people.

Just watching the video, I was on the edge of my seat! I HAVE to be there.
Yesterday I applied for a part time job. Add this on top of my current full time job and school and I'm pretty much maxed out. But I'm going to do whatever it takes to get to Oceania.

Good night!

Australia...that next step?

Today I worked. Nine to five.
After work I ate a frozen dinner and went to choir. It is now almost 10pm and here I am writing this blog. My first entry.

What you've read above is a standard day for me nowadays. The whimsical days of high school and the furious pace of college are behind me and I'm left staring down this vast expanse of my future. It's interesting...seeing this potentially fertile future, but not knowing how to harness it and not really sure if I want to commit to anything. Yet.

I think that this Australia trip will be, if I am awarded, the beginning of a new chapter. I've always told anyone who would listen that those things which have been the riskiest or scariest have been the best things I've ever done! Traveling alone to countries like Hungary and Slovakia, trying 'Segelnfliegen' in Germany, paragliding in Switzerland, parasailing in Florida and scuba diving in Mexico (with no one I knew!) are the most AMAZING experiences!

I'd always thought I'd stay in St. Louis when I finished University. That I'd settle down into a steady career and live a normal life with the occasional trip. But now that I've stepped out the doors and looked down that path, I just can't see that it would lead me to happiness.

On the other hand, I've considered moving to a country like Australia, with warm temperatures, wide spaces of barren terrain contrasted with the fertile reefs, the aboriginee's who have lived on the shores for 40,000+ years, and the settlers and prisoners who settled the country approximately 200 years ago. An exciting new landscape with opportunities that I would never have imagined in St. Louis!

I have recently begun applying locally for another job. Something part time to pay off my bills and to begin saving for that big move. I haven't settled on a destination yet but I'm hoping, with luck and the right opportunity (wink), that Australia will be my next big step. Whether it be temporary, as an Island Caretaker, or of a more permanent nature.
